Why Our Online AI Skin Analysis Tool Doesn’t Stop at the Selfie
What Hundreds of Thousands of Coaching Calls Taught Me the Algorithm Alone Can’t Do
When the first wave of AI skin analysis tools hit the market, brand after brand rushed out a version. Upload a selfie, get a percentage, get a product list. I watched most of them launch, and I didn’t rush ours out the door.
Here’s why. An algorithm can tell you that you have visible fine lines and uneven tone. It cannot tell you that you’re asking about wrinkles because you just came off three months of high stress, or that your “dry skin” is actually a reaction to a new detergent, not a chronic skin type. It reads the surface. It doesn’t know the story behind it, and skin almost always has a story behind it.
That gap is exactly what shaped how we built Skin Scan™.
What I Was Seeing Before We Ever Wrote a Line of Code
By the time we were designing our own online skin analysis tool, our coaches had already conducted over half a million live video consultations. That volume taught me something the competitor AI tools, as far as I could tell, weren’t accounting for: the selfie is a starting point, not an answer.
A photo can flag concerns. It can pick up on texture, tone, visible signs of aging. What it can’t do is ask a follow-up question. It can’t hear that you’ve been sleeping four hours a night for a month, or that you started a new medication, or that the “acne” it’s flagging is actually a reaction to a product you added last week. Those are the details that change a recommendation from generic to actually useful, and no selfie, however sharp the camera, gives you that context on its own.
I didn’t want to build an AI skin analysis tool that stopped at the photo. I wanted one that used the photo as the opening of a conversation, not the whole conversation.
How Skin Scan Is Actually Built
Skin Scan™ uses a selfie image plus your own input, not the photo alone, to understand what your skin actually needs. You answer questions about your skin, your routine, your concerns, alongside the image analysis, so the recommendation reflects more than what a camera can see in a single frame.
What actually makes it work is combining three things: the AI's read of your selfie, what you tell us yourself, and something no algorithm-only tool has behind it, the knowledge base we've built from half a million live coaching sessions. That's not just a number we cite, it's years of patterns in skin biology and lifestyle, sleep, stress, diet, hormonal shifts, that our coaches have watched play out again and again, and that history shapes how Skin Scan reads your results, not just what the camera picks up
From there, it gives you tailored product and treatment recommendations, the kind you’d expect from an AI skin analysis tool. But because it’s built on the same coaching philosophy behind our live consultations, it’s designed to connect you to an actual coach when your skin calls for more than a product list, not leave you alone with an algorithm’s best guess.
That’s the difference I was trying to build toward from the start. Convenience without losing the human judgment that catches what a scan alone will miss.
Who This Is Actually For
If you’ve never had a real skin consultation and don’t know where to start, Skin Scan gives you a fast, genuinely useful first read, not a guess disguised as science. If you already know your skin fairly well, it’s a quick way to check whether your current routine still matches what your skin needs right now, since skin changes more than most people’s routines do.
Either way, I built this to work the way I wish more AI skin analysis tools worked: as a starting point that gets smarter with a real person involved, not a replacement for one.
You can try it yourself on the Skin Scan page, take a selfie, answer a few questions, and see what it surfaces about your skin right now.
If your results point toward something more involved than a product swap, or you’d simply rather talk it through with a person, you can Coach Me and connect with one of our live coaches directly. And if signs of aging are what brought you here in the first place, our Signs of Aging collection is built around the exact concerns Skin Scan is most often asked about.
An online skin analysis should be the beginning of understanding your skin, not the end of the conversation. That’s the only version of this technology I was ever interested in building.
